Zambia : Findlay Family In Anguish After He Vanishes From Police Custody

The family of Harry Valden Findlay find themselves in a deeply worrying and distressing position, after he was reportedly taken from police custody on Saturday evening and driven away in an unmarked vehicle to a location they still cannot confirm, leaving behind medication his lawyers say he cannot safely go without.

According to a family statement, the removal happened at around 18:00 hours on 9 August, with no lawyer present and no explanation given to relatives at the scene. When family members pressed officers to say which state institution was taking him and where he was headed, they say they were met with silence. When they tried to follow the vehicle instead, they say they were threatened with arrest.

Findlay has now been in custody for six days since his arrest on 4 August, the family says, without formal charge or what they describe as lawful extension of his detention. They say their lawyers have advised that moving a detainee to a maximum security facility requires specific legal authority, and that none has been shown to the family.

The most urgent concern in the statement is medical. The family says the State has full knowledge of Findlay’s condition, having received his complete medical history along with repeated requests for him to access specialised treatment. When he was taken, they say, his prescription medication stayed behind, and missing even a single day of it carries a serious and immediate risk to his health and life. They say they have asked authorities for permission to deliver the medication to him and have heard nothing back.

The family says their lawyers have now been instructed to demand either his immediate release or that he be brought before a court to face whatever charges exist. “We ask that the law be applied to Mr Findlay as it applies to every Zambian,” the statement reads. “This is not a request for special treatment. It is a request for lawful treatment.”

Throughout the ordeal, the family says it has deliberately held back, avoiding inflammatory language and working through lawyers and lawful channels rather than public pressure. They say they are speaking out now only because staying silent is no longer possible while Findlay remains held without, in their words, the transparency and judicial oversight the rule of law demands.

Their call is direct: bring Findlay before a competent court without further delay and disclose the legal basis for holding him, or release him immediately. “We ask only that the Constitution and the law be applied to Mr Findlay in exactly the same manner in which they should be applied to every person in Zambia,” the statement reads, urging Zambians to see the case as a test of a principle that protects everyone’s liberty, not just one family’s.

The family closed by saying they continue to pray for Findlay’s safety and health, and thanked those who have reached out during what they call an extremely difficult time.
