Zambia : Chifwanakeni Urges Accountants To Drive Wealth Creation

The University of Lusaka Vice Chancellor, Professor Pinalo Chifwanakeni, has challenged the new 884 ZICA Graduates accountants to go beyond traditional accounting roles and use their skills to drive wealth creation and national development.

Professor Chifwanakeni said accountants should not limit themselves to bookkeeping, but should become strategic thinkers, entrepreneurs and advisers capable of identifying and exploiting business opportunities.

He was speaking at the 20th Graduation Ceremony of the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants at Mulungushi International Conference Centre today.

Professor Chifwanakeni said Zambia is operating in an increasingly complex economic environment characterized by rapid technological change and digital transformation, making it important for professionals to continuously upgrade their skills.

He further challenged ZICA to take advantage of its expertise by developing short courses for newly elected councilors, Members of Parliament and mayors to strengthen accountability and financial management of public resources, including Constituency Development Fund, CDF resources.

The Vice Chancellor has further urged the graduates to uphold ethical standards, saying accountants have a critical responsibility in safeguarding corporate and national resources.

 Professor Chifwanakeni also urged the graduates to embrace entrepreneurship and create businesses and employment instead of relying solely on formal employment.

He said the country’s economic growth will depend on professionals who can turn knowledge and qualifications into practical solutions, businesses and lasting wealth.

And Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) President, Joseph Matimba urged newly qualified accountants to look beyond traditional accounting practices and embrace emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

Mr Matimba said the accounting profession is changing rapidly due to digital transformation, climate change, evolving governance expectations, and growing demands for transparency and accountability.
