The Zambia Army has confirmed that soldiers seen flogging an apprehended illegal miner in a video circulating on social media were members of the Zambia Army and have since faced disciplinary action.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2026, Zambia Army spokesperson Colonel Sydney Mwewa said the video was an old recording depicting soldiers misconducting themselves in North-Western Province.

The Army said it had identified the soldiers involved and immediately took disciplinary action against them after the incident occurred.

According to Colonel Mwewa, the soldiers were charged accordingly, while Platoon Commander Lieutenant Japhet Banda, who was responsible for the troops at the time, was dismissed from the Army.

The Zambia Army expressed concern that members of the public had only recently become aware of the incident through the circulating video, despite disciplinary measures having already been taken against the soldiers involved.

The Army stressed that it does not condone indiscipline or conduct that violates the standards expected of its personnel.

“The Zambia Army does not condone indiscipline in any form. Such conduct is contrary to the values of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human dignity that the Army upholds,” Colonel Mwewa said.

The Army further warned that any soldier found guilty of misconduct would face firm and decisive disciplinary action in accordance with the Defence Act, Chapter 106 of the Laws of Zambia.

The institution said it remains committed to maintaining high standards of discipline and accountability among its personnel.

It added that measures were continually being strengthened to ensure that the conduct of soldiers reflects the honour, professionalism and integrity expected of the Zambia Army.

The statement comes as the video continues to circulate on social media, prompting public discussion over the conduct of security personnel and the treatment of suspected illegal miners.

The Zambia Army has urged the public to note that action had already been taken against the soldiers involved and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that military personnel uphold professional standards and respect for human dignity.
