A vehicle belonging to Kapoche Independent Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Miti was burnt by angry villagers in Chieftainess Kawaza’s area of Sinda District after it was allegedly suspected of being used for stock theft.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, saying the vehicle, a pearl white Ractic bearing registration number CAD 2547 and valued at K120,000, was destroyed in the fire.

Mr Mweemba said the blaze also destroyed two bales of chitenge materials valued at K2,280 and K3,850 in cash, bringing the total value of the property lost to K126,130.

He said the incident occurred around 19:30 hours on Tuesday at Lemmy Village.

According to Mr Mweemba, the driver had initially parked the vehicle at a football pitch but was advised by some residents to move it into the village to avoid it being mistaken for a vehicle used by cattle rustlers.

He said shortly after the vehicle was parked in the village, a group of people began searching for its owner, accusing him of being in the area to steal cattle.

Mr Mweemba said the driver sensed danger and attempted to flee in the vehicle but was unable to proceed after the road became impassable. He then abandoned the vehicle and ran away.

He said when Mr Miti noticed that the driver had taken longer than expected to meet him, he called and was informed about the incident.

Mr Mweemba said the parliamentary candidate later went to Lemmy Village, where he found the vehicle engulfed in flames.

Police have since opened an inquiry file, and investigations into the incident have commenced.
