“YOU HAVE FAILED TO PROTECT US; WE WILL PROTECT OURSELVES” – BINWELL MPUNDU BLASTS POLICE AFTER ATTACK ON CONVOY

Tonse Pamodzi Alliance senior official Binwell Mpundu has accused the Zambia Police Service of failing to protect opposition leaders and supporters after alleged attacks by suspected UPND cadars on the Copperbelt, warning that they would be forced to “protect ourselves” if the situation continued.

Speaking shortly after the incident on Friday, an emotional Mpundu claimed that suspected UPND cadars targeted the alliance’s vehicles, causing extensive damage while police allegedly failed to intervene.

“I’m telling you, the criminals came. It’s not like we don’t know who is sending them. We know every one of them. We know the vehicles they are using,” Mpundu said.

He alleged that the attacks began earlier in the day and that authorities had already been informed, but no effective action was taken to prevent the violence.

“The damage they’ve caused here is irreparable,” he said.

Mpundu maintained that the opposition had conducted dozens of campaign rallies without engaging in violence and questioned why those responsible for the attacks had not been restrained.

“You have never heard us attack anyone in all the 50 rallies we have held. What we have done is to be peaceful. We have been provoked,” he said.

He further accused police of frustrating the alliance’s campaign programme, saying officers were fully aware of their itinerary in the province.

“Our programme was known. We are in the province for five days. There is no way police can stop our activities when they already know our schedule,” Mpundu stated.

In one of his strongest remarks, Mpundu directly confronted police officers at the scene.

“As a leader, you have failed to protect us. Before you say anything, you have failed to protect us, and I want to assure you we will protect ourselves,” he declared.

He also alleged that some of the damaged vehicles could be inspected as evidence of the attack and claimed that he narrowly escaped serious harm.

“I was almost killed,” Mpundu said.

The incident follows heightened political tensions during the ongoing election campaigns, with both ruling and opposition parties repeatedly accusing each other of violence and intimidation.

Police had not issued an official statement on Mpundu’s allegations by the time of publication.
