The National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) has called on the United Party for National Development (UPND) government to focus its second term on increasing local Zambian ownership in the mining sector.

 In an exclusive interview with the Zambian Business Times (ZBT), NUMAW president Saul Simujika outlined key expectations and priorities for the New Dawn administration as it commences its new mandate. Simujika acknowledged the progress made by the government in stabilizing the mining sector and the broader economy during its first term. He emphasized the need for the next phase to shift from stabilization to growth, citing the national production target of 3 million metric tons of copper by 2031.

“We are expecting more mines to be opened and expansion of existing ones to drive production growth. Achieving these targets will require close supervision of mining companies to ensure compliance and productivity,” Simujika said.

The NUMAW president also stressed the importance of ensuring that mine workers are well-cared for, with a focus on job creation and improved working conditions. He highlighted the critical role of local investors, noting that many Zambians possess the capacity to fund and manage mining operations. “It is important that, as new mines are opened, Zambians are given the opportunity to obtain licenses and participate more actively in the sector,” he added.

Simujika further called on the Ministry of Mines to strengthen the Department of Safety in light of recent accidents in the sector, urging for enhanced safety measures and oversight to protect workers. When asked about potential candidates for ministerial positions in the new Cabinet, Simujika declined to comment on specific names but emphasized the need for leadership that will build on current achievements and align with the President’s vision for the mining industry and the nation.
