United Party for National Development (UPND) Serenje District Information and Publicity Secretary, Victor Hamachili has urged political players to refrain from using tribalism as a campaign tool, ahead of the general elections.

Mr Hamachili said politics should be a contest of ideas aimed at improving the livelihoods of people in communities.

Speaking during a programme on Serenje Community radio dubbed, Know Your Candidate, Mr Hamachili urged aspiring candidates to embrace unity and peaceful coexistence during the campaign period.

“Politicians should focus on implementing sound policies that benefit the people rather than attacking their opponents using tribal remarks,” he said.

The UPND Information and Publicity Secretary noted that development does not favour any particular person’s tribe, but is intended to benefit every member of the community regardless of their tribe.

Mr Hamachili emphasised that tribalism does not promote development but instead divides communities and hinders progress.

He further said the UPND party in the district will not tolerate hate speech or tribalism from politicians as the country heads towards the general elections.

Meanwhile, UPND Lupiya ward aspiring candidate Daniel Kunda urged members of the community to support leaders who are committed to driving development rather than promoting tribalism.
