The United Nations (UN) in Zambia has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that it deployed an electoral observation mission for Zambia’s August 13, 2026 General Election.
The UN says it did not deploy election observers and has no electoral observation mandate in Zambia.
The clarification follows social media reports claiming that UN observers had congratulated a presidential candidate following the election.
UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia Beatrice Mutali says any claims suggesting that the UN or its representatives endorsed, congratulated or commented on any candidate or electoral outcome are false and misleading.
The UN has urged members of the public and media houses to verify information through its official communication channels and avoid sharing unverified content that could fuel misinformation and disinformation.
The organisation has also called for dialogue, urging political leaders and their supporters to uphold the peace pledge and reject violence while awaiting the announcement of election results.
