Trump Threatens Military Action Against Oman Over Iran Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Oman if the country interferes with Washington’s efforts to reach an agreement with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump made the warning during an interview with Fox News on August 17, saying the United States would take military action if Oman “gets in the way” of U.S. efforts.
The remarks came as Oman is playing a key diplomatic role between Washington and Tehran, particularly in efforts to establish arrangements that would allow commercial shipping to resume through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and Oman have been working on a proposed transit arrangement, with Iranian officials saying an understanding had been reached on the map of a shipping route.
The development is notable because Oman is a U.S. partner and has traditionally maintained a policy of neutrality and mediation in regional disputes. Muscat has repeatedly acted as a channel for communication between Washington and Tehran.
The warning also comes immediately after the 60-day U.S.-Iran negotiation period expired on August 17 without a comprehensive agreement, adding another layer of uncertainty to efforts to reopen the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy route. Any prolonged disruption to commercial shipping through the waterway could further increase risks to oil and LNG supplies and place additional pressure on global energy markets.
Trump’s latest remarks therefore put direct pressure on a U.S. partner that is simultaneously attempting to mediate with Iran, while negotiations over the future of the Strait remain unresolved. The threat represents a sharp escalation in rhetoric surrounding control of one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints.
