The National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu have taken refuge at a United Nations agency premises in Lusaka, citing fears of arrest over allegations linking them to a militia group.

According to _News Diggers_, citing impeccable sources within Cabinet Office, the two opposition leaders moved to the UN agency on Monday to seek asylum.

The UN office in Zambia has since officially notified government of their presence at the premises.

The development comes days after a violent confrontation in Lusaka and a public statement by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa.

Kangwa alleged that Mundubile was present at the scene of a shootout on the night of 13th August between police and an armed group described as a militia linked to the NRPUP.

In the statement, Kangwa said the incident occurred during a joint security operation and that preliminary findings placed Mundubile at the location when the exchange of fire happened.

He further indicated that government was pursuing investigations into the formation, funding and activities of the alleged militia, and that those found culpable would face the law.

Security sources said that in the hours after the shootout, special forces carried out a raid on Mundubile’s residence in Lusaka.

Officers were reported to have cordoned off the property, conducted searches, and seized documents and electronic devices. The operation was part of what authorities termed a broader effort to establish the extent of the alleged group’s operations and its links to political actors.

Mundubile has denied the allegations. In remarks to party officials and through close aides, he rejected claims that he was at the scene of the shootout or that NRPUP operates any armed wing.

He described the accusations as politically motivated and an attempt to criminalize the opposition ahead of constitutional processes following the 2026 elections.

Zulu has also denied any involvement with a militia. Party spokespersons said both leaders remain committed to peaceful political engagement and to the rule of law.

According to reports, the UN agency confirmed to government that Mundubile and Zulu were on its premises, in line with standard protocol when individuals seek protection at UN facilities.

Government has not commented publicly on whether it will request the two to leave the premises or pursue charges.

The allegations have heightened political tension in Lusaka. Civil society organizations have called for calm and for investigations to be conducted transparently and within constitutional bounds. They urged that any prosecutions be based on evidence and not be used to stifle dissent.

Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Secretary General Celestin Mukandila earlier appealed for restraint among party supporters and said the country needed healing after a rigorous election.

With the matter now involving both the security services and the United Nations, focus shifts to how authorities will proceed. Legal experts note that asylum within a UN office does not grant immunity from Zambian law, but triggers diplomatic processes between government and the UN.

For now, Mundubile and Zulu remain at the UN agency in Lusaka as police say investigations into the 13th August shootout and the alleged militia network continue.
