Drama erupted at the National Results Tallying Centre at Mulungushi International Conference Centre on this after Tonse Alliance official Enock Tonga stormed the podium and called for the presidential election to be scrapped.

Video clips shared online show Tonga addressing the room and demanding that ECZ immediately stop announcing results.

Within minutes, security officers moved in, surrounded him, and escorted him out of the hall.

Reports indicate he was later detained, though police have not issued any formal statement or confirmed charges.

The incident is the latest escalation between the Tonse Alliance and the Electoral Commission of Zambia over how presidential results are being collated.

Tonse representatives have been pushing for ECZ to pause the national announcement and instead reconcile every constituency figure against the original polling-station Gen-20 forms. ECZ, however, has continued to release results as they come in from the provinces.

Tonga’s declaration that the election was “cancelled” carries no legal weight.

Under Zambian electoral law, political parties cannot unilaterally stop an election or invalidate votes.

Any dispute must follow the procedures laid out in the Electoral Process Act and can be challenged in court.

His outburst follows a similar call earlier by NRPUP running mate Makebi Zulu, who demanded a full polling-station-by-polling-station audit.

The opposition alleges there are discrepancies, missing records, and interference in the process — claims ECZ has disputed and which are yet to be independently verified.

The confrontation now shifts focus to documentation. ECZ faces growing pressure to show a clear audit trail for every disputed figure from polling station to national tally.

At the same time, Tonse will be expected to table the Gen-20 forms it says back its objections.

With trust in the process wearing thin, the contest is no longer just about numbers. It has become a fight over confidence in the count itself.

In a moment this tense, verified paperwork will matter more than statements made from a podium.
