THREE ZNS OFFICERS SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR MURDER OF STELLA MWANZA OF MONZE

The Livingstone High Court has sentenced three Zambia National Service officers to life imprisonment with hard labour for the murder of 46-year-old Stella Mwanza of Monze.

The sentence was handed down by Judge-in-Charge of the Livingstone High Court, Lady Justice Catherine M. Lombe, after convicting Douglas Kanenga, 22, Trust Miyoba, 24, and Brian Hamwiinde, 30.

The trio were jointly charged with one count of murder, contrary to Section 200 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The court heard that Mwanza was found dead in the passenger seat of a white Corolla belonging to a ZNS officer. The vehicle was parked near the gate after the trio shot her while on night patrols around the ZNS Milling Plant.

During the trial, Sylvester Salali, husband to the deceased and a Correctional Officer at Monze Correctional Facility, testified that his wife left home for a funeral at around 19:00 hours on 27th December 2025, despite pleas from him and their son for her not to go.

He told the court he was informed of his wife’s death by a workmate while on duty, morning of 28th December 2025.

Eight witnesses, including ZNS officers and the owner of the white Corolla who were in the company of the deceased, testified in the matter.

The prosecution team comprised Senior State Advocate Matumo Mululu, State Advocate Alex Syulikwa, and State Advocate Hannah Mpamba Mwila. They called eight witnesses.

In passing sentence, Lady Justice Lombe cited the gravity of the offence and imposed the maximum penalty provided for under the law.
