The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has resolved to conduct a fresh parliamentary election in Mandewu Constituency of Lusaka District following a security incident that disrupted the aggregation of National Assembly election results.

In a press release dated 28 August 2026, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission had decided to hold a fresh parliamentary election after the Returning Officer was rendered unable to declare the results of the Mandewu Constituency parliamentary election.

The decision follows an incident that occurred during the aggregation of results from the 13 August 2026 General Elections.

According to the ECZ, the Lusaka District Electoral Officer reported on 18 August 2026 that unknown individuals attacked the results totalling centre in Mandewu Constituency.

The attackers allegedly destroyed the result transmission kits and fled with all the election documentation at the centre.

The incident consequently left the Returning Officer unable to complete the process required to declare the parliamentary election results for Mandewu Constituency.

The ECZ said that, in view of the circumstances, it had resolved to conduct a fresh parliamentary election, commonly referred to as a by-election, in Mandewu Constituency.

However, the Commission has not yet announced the date for the fresh election, stating that the date will be communicated in due course.

The decision means that voters in Mandewu Constituency will have another opportunity to cast their ballots in the parliamentary election after the results from the 13 August poll could not be formally declared.

The development comes amid heightened attention on electoral processes following the 2026 General Elections, with the security and integrity of election materials remaining a key concern.

The ECZ has previously emphasised the importance of safeguarding election materials and ensuring that the results management process is completed in accordance with electoral procedures.

The Commission’s decision to order a fresh election in Mandewu follows its assessment that the disruption at the totalling centre made it impossible for the Returning Officer to declare the parliamentary results.

Further details, including the date, nomination timetable and campaign arrangements for the Mandewu Constituency parliamentary election, are expected to be announced by the ECZ in due course.
