Pregnancy does not always begin with a clear or immediate sign, and some people may notice changes in their bodies before taking a pregnancy test. While these symptoms can sometimes suggest pregnancy, they can also be caused by hormonal changes, stress, illness, medication or other conditions.
One of the most commonly recognised early signs is a missed period. For someone who normally has regular menstrual cycles, failing to get a period around the expected time can be an important indication of possible pregnancy. However, periods can also be delayed for many other reasons, including stress, changes in weight, intense exercise and hormonal fluctuations.
Another possible sign is unusual tiredness. Some people experience significant fatigue during early pregnancy, partly because hormonal changes can affect the body and contribute to increased sleepiness.
Nausea or vomiting is another well-known pregnancy symptom. Despite being commonly called “morning sickness,” nausea can occur at any time of day. Some people may experience it relatively early, while others may not experience it at all.
A person may also notice changes in their breasts. The breasts can become tender, swollen or more sensitive, while the nipples or area around them may appear darker. These changes are associated with hormonal changes and can occur during pregnancy, although similar symptoms can happen before a normal period.
Frequent urination can also occur. Hormonal and circulatory changes during pregnancy can increase the need to urinate, although frequent urination can also be caused by increased fluid intake, urinary infections and other conditions.

Some people notice changes in appetite or food preferences. Foods that were previously enjoyable may suddenly become unappealing, while certain smells may become particularly strong or unpleasant. Others may develop cravings for particular foods.
Another possible sign is mild cramping or light spotting around the time an embryo implants in the uterus. However, bleeding during early pregnancy can have different causes, and not every episode of spotting indicates pregnancy.
Mood changes may also occur because pregnancy hormones can affect emotions. A person may feel unusually emotional, irritable or sensitive. However, mood changes are also common before menstruation and during periods of stress.
Some people also experience bloating, constipation, headaches or dizziness during early pregnancy. Again, these symptoms are not unique to pregnancy and should not be used on their own to conclude that someone is pregnant.
One important point is that there is no collection of symptoms that can confirm pregnancy without testing. Two people can be pregnant and experience completely different symptoms, while someone who is not pregnant can experience many of the same signs.
If pregnancy is possible, a home pregnancy test is generally the simplest way to check. Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy. Testing around or after the expected period can provide a more useful result, although the appropriate timing can vary depending on the test and menstrual cycle.
A healthcare professional can also confirm pregnancy and provide appropriate advice, particularly if there is uncertainty about the timing of conception or if symptoms are unusual.
Anyone who may be pregnant and experiences severe abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, severe dizziness or shoulder pain should seek urgent medical attention, because some causes of bleeding or pain during early pregnancy can require prompt assessment.
So while a missed period, nausea, tiredness, breast tenderness, frequent urination and changes in appetite may raise suspicion, symptoms alone cannot prove that someone is pregnant.
The only reliable way to know is through pregnancy testing and, when necessary, confirmation by a healthcare professional.
