SENIOR members of the Tonse Alliance were among 11 people apprehended during a police operation targeting a suspected militia group in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area on the night of August 13, 2026.

According to a statement issued last night by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, those arrested include UNIP faction leader Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Patrick Mwansa, and NRPUP presidential spokesperson and lawyer George Chisanga. Mr. Kangwa said the persons of interest had been under surveillance for several years, and more intensively in recent months. He alleged some were connected to military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps, posing a serious threat to State security. “The operation resulted in the seizure of restricted high-grade military weapons and the apprehension of suspected members of the militia and other persons found at the scene, while others fled and their whereabouts are unknown,” he said. He said occupants of the premises fired shots at law enforcement agents, resulting in an exchange of fire. Weapons, ammunition and other materials allegedly intended for use in an armed insurrection were recovered. Others held in custody at various police stations in Lusaka were named as Simon Phiri, Richard Banda, Francis Mulenga and Patrick Mwansa. Mr. Kangwa added that NRPUP president and presidential candidate Brian Mundubile was also found at the scene. He said the suspects have been charged and will be given access to families and lawyers. Investigations are ongoing. Advertisement Advertise here Reach readers inside premium article pages.
