President Hakainde Hichilema has described Former Cabinet Minister in the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) administration, Austin Liato, as a dedicated public servant who made a significant contribution to the development of Zambia’s labour sector.

President Hichilema notes that the late Mr Liato, distinguished himself through many years of dedicated service to the country, particularly during his time in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

ZANIS reports that President Hichilema made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, at a Funeral Church Service held at Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka today.

President Hichilema said Mr Liato, working as a Cabinet Minister, provided leadership and oversight to one of the most critical sectors of the economy.

He added that the late minister played an important role in maintaining cordial relations between the Government and the labour movement.

President Hichilema said Mr Liato promoted dialogue and an open-door policy, which helped foster harmony in the labour market and contributed to increased investor confidence, job creation and economic development.

He further described the late Mr Liato as a respected trade unionist who laid a strong foundation for improved labour relations between Government, trade unions and other stakeholders.

In his Eulogy, Oasis of Blessings Assembly Bishop, Max Nalumango, said Mr Liato was a man of determination, a family man and cherished his friends, adding that he admired his sense of humor.

And Widow Fatima Liato, in her tribute delivered on her behalf by Aminata Fofana, described her husband as a true friend, kind and star of her story.

Mr Liato who died on August 6, 2026 at the age of 61, at Maina Soko Medical Hospital has since been put to rest at Lusaka’s Leopards Hill Memorial Park.

He is survived by a wife, 13 Children and 12 Grandchildren
