A 53-year-old Assistant Superintendent, Daniel Banda, died after shooting himself at Police Service Headquarters on Sept. 14, 2026, police said.

Police said Banda locked himself in his office at around 17:00 hours with an AK-47 rifle and a pistol and threatened to take his own life. Negotiations were conducted until about 20:45 hours.

He subsequently discharged a firearm, shooting himself in the head, according to a statement from Assistant Public Relations Officer Timothy Malumo.

The body has been deposited at University Teaching Hospital Mortuary awaiting a postmortem. Police said investigations have been instituted and more details will be released in due course.
