Former Chililabombwe Member of Parliament Paul Kabuswe has petitioned the Lusaka High Court seeking to nullify the Chililabombwe parliamentary election, citing alleged electoral irregularities, corruption, violence, undue influence and character assassination during the run-up to and conduct of the polls.

Mr. Kabuswe, who contested the election on the UPND ticket, lost to resolute party candidate Nsofwa Lupele, who was declared winner after polling 10,920 votes against Mr. Kabuswe’s 8,986 votes.

In his petition, Mr. Kabuswe alleges that Mr. Lupele and his agents distributed cash amounts ranging from K50 to K100 to voters at Ishuko tavern polling station on election day and engaged in a campaign of character assassination, accusing him of theft, tribalism and nepotism.

Mr. Kabuswe also alleges that the election was marred by irregularities in the results recorded by the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ-, and claims that his supporters were prevented from voting after rocks were placed across a road at Fikolongo in Chitambi ward, blocking his vehicle carrying voters to a polling station.

He is asking the high court to declare that the election was not conducted in accordance with the constitution and the electoral process act, arguing that the alleged corrupt and illegal practices, violence, intimidation and undue influence affected the outcome of the election.

Mr. Kabuswe is further seeking an order declaring Mr. Lupele’s election null and void and directing the ECZ to conduct a fresh parliamentary election in Chililabombwe constituency in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, former Lands Minister Sylvia Masebo has petitioned the Chongwe East parliamentary election, citing alleged false and defamatory statements, misconduct and improper attempts to influence voters during the campaign period.

Ms. Masebo, who contested the election, polled 6,798 votes against Anita Kamanga’s 16,058 votes

She alleges that Ms. Kamanga and members of her team circulated false publications claiming that she had lost the UPND adoption process and was only adopted because of her position in the party.

And losing Kanchibiya Member of Parliament Sunday Chanda has also petitioned the election, alleging widespread illegal practices and violence against people and wants the election nullified.

According to court records seen by phoenix news, more than 20 election petitions are expected to be filed across the country.
