A Nakonde driver has been killed at his home in Katozi village after armed assailants allegedly attacked him and got away with his boss’s client’s vehicle.
The deceased, identified as Chatowa Silungwe, was attacked on Friday night as he tried to stop the suspects from driving away with a Toyota Land Cruiser he had cleared and was expected to deliver to its owner in Lusaka.
Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Lubinda Mayamba has confirmed the incident to Chete FM this morning, saying police have opened investigations into a case of murder and aggravated robbery.
According to information gathered by Chete FM, Chatowa arrived home around 22:00 hours after returning from Nakonde Customs Yard, where he had gone to clear the vehicle.
The vehicle was expected to leave for Lusaka today, Saturday, around 03:00 hours, with Chatowa also scheduled to drop his girlfriend in Mpika so that she could connect back to Kasama, where she comes from.
Chete FM spoke to Chatowa’s girlfriend, whose name has been withheld for this report, who explained that after arriving home, Chatowa told her that he wanted to take a bath.
She said he first went to the kitchen, collected three buckets of water and drew more water from outside within the yard before returning to the house.
She explained that he then poured water into a bucket connected to an electric switch to warm it for his bath before going to the restroom, which is located outside the house.
At the time, the girlfriend said she remained in the living room, where the main door leading outside was open.

She said two unknown men entered the house and one of them, who was armed with a knife, pointed it at her and demanded the vehicle keys.
Fearing for her life, she led them to the bedroom where the keys were picked from a table. She said the suspects also took a phone that was charging near the bed.
The girlfriend said the men instructed her to kneel down and warned her not to make any noise before they went outside.
She said one of the suspects spoke to his colleague in Swahili before they left the house.
She later screamed for help, prompting Chatowa to come out from the bathroom and confront the suspects.
She said one suspect was already inside the vehicle starting the engine, while the other, who had a knife, remained outside and confronted Chatowa.
Police say a neighbour, whose name has been withheld, heard Chatowa calling for help and came outside.
According to the police report, the neighbour saw two unknown men, with one standing near the vehicle armed with a knife while the other was reversing the vehicle.
The neighbour told police that he saw Chatowa chasing the vehicle and that he was attacked in the process before the suspects sped off with the vehicle.
Chatowa sustained injuries, including a cut at the back of his head and bruises on his legs and hands. Police say a knife was used during the attack.
He was rushed to Nakonde Urban Clinic by his girlfriend and the neighbour but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police say the stolen white Toyota Land Cruiser, belonging to a Lusaka businessman, has not yet been recovered.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with no arrests made so far.
