0 ViewsThe National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity president Brian Mundubile has rejected the outcome of Zambia’s 2026 presidential election, saying it does not accurately reflect what happened during the voting process.
In a statement issued after results were announced, Mundubile said the NRPUP had documented alleged irregularities covering ballot security, the transportation and handling of electoral materials, and what the party described as discrepancies between votes recorded at polling stations and the figures later announced.
He said the party had gathered evidence and records that would be submitted to the relevant legal institutions within the required timeframe.
“The results announced last night are not results that we accept as a true reflection of what took place across this election,” Mundubile said.
He said that regardless of the declared outcome, the number of votes secured by the NRPUP showed significant public support for the opposition, and he pledged to continue representing those who backed his candidature.
Mundubile also raised concern over the detention of his campaign manager, Davies Chisopa. He demanded what he called an immediate, lawful and transparent explanation from authorities.
He said if Chisopa was suspected of an offence, evidence should be produced and the allegations tested in court, with his rights protected under Zambian law.
Mundubile disclosed that he was under protection after allegedly receiving threats against his life.
He gave an account of an incident at his residence in which he said armed men entered the property and shots were fired while he and others were unarmed and hiding out of fear.
According to Mundubile, former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya was shot during the incident, something he said he personally witnessed.
He further claimed that Kafwaya was later reported missing and that his family had not received an adequate explanation about his whereabouts or condition.
Mundubile called on authorities to state whether Kafwaya was being held by any state agency and, if so, to explain the legal basis for his detention and allow family and lawyers access. If Kafwaya was not in state custody, he said, authorities had an obligation to establish his whereabouts and investigate what had happened to him.
On the election itself, Mundubile said the NRPUP would pursue what it considers evidence of suspected electoral manipulation and ballot tampering.
He cited concerns around electoral documentation, the so-called “G20 papers”, ballot transportation and security, and discrepancies allegedly identified by party representatives. He said the issues should be determined through evidence and legal processes rather than political rhetoric.
“We will challenge those results for which we believe there are lawful grounds to do so,” he said, while stressing that the party would pursue its case peacefully and within the law.
Mundubile appealed to regional and international partners, election observers and democratic institutions to remain engaged with developments in Zambia, arguing that questions around detention, intimidation and electoral conduct should not end simply because results have been declared.
Despite rejecting the presidential results, Mundubile urged NRPUP supporters to remain peaceful and avoid retaliation or provocation.
“There will be no call from me for violence. There will be no call from the NRPUP for retaliation,” Mundubile said.
He asked supporters not to let anger or provocation undermine what he described as a peaceful democratic movement, saying the party would allow its evidence to be examined through lawful channels and would provide further details on its intended legal action in due course.
Mundubile concluded by calling for peace and urging Zambians to remain safe while the party pursues answers over the election, arrests, detentions and other incidents surrounding the conclusion of the electoral process.
