National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) leader Brian Mundubile has rejected the outcome of Zambia’s 2026 presidential election, announcing that his party will challenge the results through legal channels.

Mundubile’s response comes just hours after the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officially declared President Hakainde Hichilema the winner of the August 13 presidential election.

According to the ECZ’s consolidated results from all 226 constituencies, President Hichilema, who contested on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket, secured 2,965,326 votes, while Mundubile received 1,856,217 votes.

Despite the official announcement, Mundubile said his party had identified what he described as irregularities in the electoral process.

According to Hot FM, the NRPUP leader said in a statement that his party had documented alleged discrepancies involving ballot security, the transportation and handling of electoral materials, and differences between figures recorded at polling stations and those later announced.

Mundubile said the party would present its evidence to the appropriate legal institutions within the timeframe provided by law.

He maintained that the party remains committed to pursuing its concerns through constitutional and democratic processes.

The NRPUP leader also dismissed allegations linking his party or members of his campaign team to an alleged insurgency.

According to Mundubile, his party has remained committed to peaceful political participation and democratic principles.

He further called for authorities to provide an immediate and lawful explanation regarding the detention of his campaign manager, Davies Chisopa.

Mundubile also expressed concern over the whereabouts of former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya.

He alleged that Kafwaya was shot during a police operation at his residence in Kabulonga following the elections.

The incident reportedly occurred during an operation in which authorities arrested 11 individuals in connection with allegations involving foreign militias said to have threatened national security.

Mundubile called on authorities to disclose Kafwaya’s whereabouts and ensure that his constitutional rights are protected if he remains in state custody.

Despite rejecting the election results, Mundubile appealed to his supporters to remain calm and avoid any acts of violence.

He emphasized that the NRPUP would not encourage retaliation or any form of unrest and would instead rely on the country’s legal system to address its concerns.

His statement adds another dimension to the post-election debate, as political parties continue to assess the outcome of one of Zambia’s most closely watched elections.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema has already called for national unity following his re-election, urging citizens to put political differences aside and focus on development and economic growth.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has not yet responded to the specific allegations raised by Mundubile regarding the handling of electoral materials.
