MUNDUBILE, MAKEBI ZULU DENIED ACCESS TO LAWYERS SAYS KASONDE MWENDA.

The UPND Government has been accused of denying incarcerated Tonse Pamodzi Alliance leaders Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu access to their lawyers at Mukobeko Maximum Prison.

According to EFF President and Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Council of Presidents member Kasonde Mwenda C, State Counsel Sakwiba Sikota and State Counsel Chifumu Kingdom Banda have allegedly been turned away twice when attempting to meet Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu at the correctional facility.

Kasonde Mwenda C says the alleged denial of access to legal counsel is unlawful and amounts to an affront to the constitutional rights of Brian Mundubile, Makebi Zulu and other detained members of the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance.

“It is unlawful and an affront to their constitutional rights to prevent detainees from seeing their lawyers, but unfortunately, that is the path the UPND Government has taken,” Kasonde Mwenda C said.

Kasonde Mwenda C has questioned why the situation is allegedly different today, compared to when President Hakainde Hichilema was in opposition.

“Mr. Hakainde Hichilema was always allowed to meet his lawyers when he was in opposition, but what has changed now?

He has further accused the UPND Government of taking Zambia backwards democratically, warning that the country’s democratic credentials are being closely watched by the international community

“We are going backwards, and the world is watching and laughing at us as we destroy the democracy our forefathers fought so hard for. That is not the Zambia we want.” he stated.

Kasonde Mwenda C has since appealed directly to President Hakainde Hichilema to intervene and ensure that Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu are granted what he described as unimpeded access to legal counsel in the interest of justice.
