Mundubile alleges snipers targeted NRPUP rally after police disperse Mongu meeting

NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has alleged that snipers were deployed to target members of his party during a campaign rally in Mongu, claiming that police used teargas to provide cover for a planned attack.

Mongu, 6 August – The allegations followed the disruption of an NRPUP campaign rally in Mongu, Western Province, where police dispersed supporters using teargas.

Speaking after the incident, Mr Mundubile questioned the motive behind the police action, alleging that armed snipers had been positioned to target individuals at the rally. He said his party would not be intimidated and vowed to continue campaigning despite the incident.

“Barotseland needs development and not snipers that have been sponsored to follow us around,” Mr Mundubile said.

He claimed that the use of teargas was “just the tip of the iceberg” and alleged that it was intended to create an opportunity for snipers to attack selected individuals.

“The question is, who do they want to kill? It is unprecedented and it has never happened before. If there was any wrongdoing, we would have been told by any senior police officer. They would have approached the vice chair of the party and we would have agreed on something,” he said.

Mr Mundubile further accused the authorities of attempting to intimidate his party but insisted the campaign would continue.

“We have a message for President Hakainde Hichilema: we are not afraid. We are standing here firmly to defend the Zambian people. We have put our lives on the line for the Zambian people, and we are not withdrawing from this campaign. We are proceeding with our campaigns,” he said.

Earlier during his address, Mr Mundubile pledged to tackle poverty and underdevelopment in Barotseland if elected President.

He also promised to reopen discussions on the Barotse Agreement of 1964, describing it as a long-standing national issue that required resolution through dialogue.

Mr Mundubile said his administration would engage the Barotse Royal Establishment under a mutually agreed framework aimed at resolving the matter with “dignity, fairness and in the spirit of One Zambia, One Nation.”

He added that citizens would not be arrested solely for discussing the Barotse Agreement, saying public debate on the issue should be protected as part of constitutional freedoms.

Meanwhile, Barotseland Royal Establishment Ngambela Mukela Manyando welcomed the NRPUP delegation and urged any future administration to prioritise education and infrastructure in the region.

Mr Manyando said poverty in Barotseland remained widespread and linked it to several longstanding challenges, including poor roads and a declining education system.

He noted that successive governments had made promises to improve infrastructure but said little progress had been achieved.

The Ngambela also said the region required more schools to improve access to education and reverse decades of decline, adding that addressing education would be key to reducing poverty in Barotseland.

Police had not immediately responded publicly to Mr Mundubile’s allegations of snipers at the time of publication.
