Mulungushi University Students Union President, David Banda, has reaffirmed the union’s endorsement of President Hakainde Hichilema’s candidature ahead of the August 13 General Elections.

Mr Banda says the President has transformed the lives of students through increased support to higher education.

 Mr Banda cited the enhanced meal allowances, book allowances, accommodation allowances and the student loan scheme as some of the interventions that have benefited university students across the country.

He said students appreciate government’s investment in education and skills development through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which has created opportunities for young people to acquire entrepreneurship and vocational skills.

The union leader said this in Chisamba District today during the commissioning of the 75 million United States 100-megawatt Phase Two Chisamba Solar Power Plant by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Banda further reiterated that students’ Unions in Luapula, Central and Eastern Provinces have endorsed President Hichilema, adding that more student bodies from across the country are expected to follow suit.

And, Mr Banda stated that the commissioning of the second phase of the Chisamba Solar Power Plant demonstrates government’s commitment to diversifying the country’s energy mix and reducing dependence on hydroelectric power.

He noted that the project will boost agriculture, industrial development, job creation and attract more investment while strengthening the country’s resilience against the adverse effects of drought.

Mr Banda added that the completion of the second 100-megawatt phase within a year of the commissioning of Phase One reflects government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development and expanding access to clean and sustainable energy.

He also noted that projects such as the Chisamba Solar Power Plant are creating employment opportunities for graduates, particularly those with engineering and technical qualifications.

Meanwhile, Mr Banda dismissed media reports alleging that students from his institution attended opposition Tonse Alliance political rallies recently held in some parts of the country.
