A 35-year-old man was fatally shot by police in Barlastone, Matero, after he allegedly attacked officers who had gone to his residence to follow up reports of malicious damage to property and threatening violence.

Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident in a statement.

The shooting occurred at about 05:00 hours on September 5, 2026. The deceased was identified as Felix Sakashashi.

Police said between 03:00 and 04:00 hours they received a report that Sakashashi had damaged the windscreen of a Toyota Corolla, registration AID 5082, following a dispute with a taxi driver over fare.

In a separate report, a 50-year-old female relative alleged that Sakashashi had damaged windowpanes at her residence and threatened to kill her while armed with a machete.

According to police, officers went to Sakashashi’s residence. Upon arrival, he emerged armed with a pick-mattock and a machete and advanced toward them.

Sakashashi struck one officer on the right arm with the machete, causing injury. As he attempted to strike again, another officer discharged a firearm in response to what police described as an “immediate threat,” fatally wounding Sakashashi.

He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police recovered a pick-mattock, a machete, a knife, and four screwdrivers from the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate Sakashashi had prior convictions for malicious damage to property, assault occasioning bodily harm, and threatening violence.

The body has been deposited at UTH Mortuary pending a post-mortem. The injured officer was treated and later discharged.

An inquiry file has been opened into the incident.
