NRP-UP presidential running mate Makebi Zulu has alleged that presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and members of his family have been picked up from his residence in Kabulonga, Lusaka, by heavily armed security personnel.

Zulu claims that more than 40 soldiers and other security personnel were involved in the operation and alleges that Mundubile and his wife were assaulted before being taken away.

In a statement posted on his social media page this evening, Zulu said the family had been taken to an undisclosed location.

“President Brian Mundubile and his family have been picked by the Military from his residence in Kabulonga along Kudu Road to an undisclosed location,” Zulu said.

“Over 40 Soldiers and other security personnel were present and brutalized President Mundubile and his wife as they lifted them and threw them into their vehicle.”

The allegations come shortly after Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana visited Ibex Hill Police Station in Lusaka and publicly dismissed reports that Mundubile was being held there.

Kawana reportedly challenged the authenticity of a video circulating online showing Mundubile at the police station, saying the footage was from an earlier occasion when the opposition leader had previously been detained.

The conflicting accounts have now raised fresh questions over Mundubile’s whereabouts.

At the time of publication, there was no independent confirmation available to Zambian Eye that Mundubile had been taken by military personnel, nor had authorities publicly confirmed the operation described by Zulu.

The development follows a tense post-election period in which Mundubile’s campaign has raised concerns over the handling of its officials and supporters by security agencies.

Mundubile had earlier been reported to have been picked up by police and taken to Ibex Hill Police Station, a report that was subsequently disputed by Government.

The latest allegation is therefore likely to intensify scrutiny of the security situation surrounding the leading opposition candidate as Zambia awaits further developments in the aftermath of Thursday’s presidential election.

Zambian Eye is seeking a response from the Zambia Police Service, the Ministry of Home Affairs and other relevant authorities regarding the allegations and Mundubile’s current whereabouts.
