LUSAKA City Council (LCC) has secured K40 million through the National Disaster Risk Management Division (NDRMD) to strengthen the city’s resilience to flooding and expand drainage infrastructure in vulnerable areas.

Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa said the funds, received by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, will be channelled towards constructing and establishing drainage systems in identified areas of the city.

Mr Mwewa said expanding drainage infrastructure is central to his vision for a safer, cleaner and more resilient Lusaka, particularly as the city faces increased storm water challenges during the rainy season.

He said the investment will increase drainage coverage and improve the city’s capacity to manage storm water.

Mr Mwewa also urged residents to change their attitudes towards waste disposal, warning that dumping rubbish in drains undermines drainage infrastructure and increases flooding risks.
