BREAKING: LAWYERS SAY CRIMINAL CASES AGAINST CHILUFYA TAYALI HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED, RETURNED TO ZAMBIA AFTER DUE LEGAL PROCESS

LUSAKA – Social and political commentator Chilufya Tayali has returned to Zambia after spending time outside the country, with his legal team announcing that all criminal matters against him have been discontinued following due legal process.

In a statement released on Thursday, Ituna Partners, through lawyer Mwansa Chambaila, dismissed claims that Tayali had returned in defiance of the courts, insisting that his return was lawful and made only after extensive legal consultations with the relevant authorities.

According to the law firm, Tayali acted on legal advice throughout the process and only came back to Zambia after a comprehensive review of the procedural status of all matters affecting him.

The lawyers revealed that on June 25, 2026, Tayali issued an unconditional public apology to His Royal Highness Chief Mukuni, the Bemba-speaking community, President Hakainde Hichilema, the Defence and Security Services, and the people of Zambia for statements he acknowledged were inappropriate and offensive.

They said the apology reflected genuine remorse and a commitment to taking responsibility for his actions, noting that Zambia’s criminal justice system recognizes reconciliation, restorative justice, and rehabilitation as part of the legal process where appropriate.

Mr. Chambaila further disclosed that the firm engaged all relevant stakeholders to ensure every legal requirement was fully complied with before Tayali’s return. Following those engagements, the criminal matters against him were discontinued, paving the way for his lawful return to the country.

The lawyers stressed that suggestions Tayali received special treatment are false, maintaining that the law was allowed to take its full course.

“Mr. Tayali’s return has occurred strictly within the confines of the legal process and in accordance with the laws of the Republic,” the statement said.

The legal team said Tayali is grateful for the opportunity to reunite with his family and is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days, where he will once again apologize to the Zambian people.

He is also expected to launch a nationwide public awareness campaign encouraging the responsible use of social media and urging citizens to avoid conduct that infringes on the rights of others or brings them into conflict with the law.
