Lawrence Mudzinganyama Arrested, Released On Warning Ahead Of October Court Date

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that Lawrence Mudzinganyama handed himself over to authorities following a massive public outcry over a viral video filmed at a Sandton establishment.

Mudzinganyama was arrested at the Randburg Police Station and subsequently released on a warning. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 1 October 2026.

Responding to public scrutiny regarding his immediate release on warning, the SAPS clarified that standard legal protocols must be maintained to establish a prima facie case.

The incident, which took place at the Vlamo Restaurant in Sandton, allegedly involved Mudzinganyama threatening a group of women. The corporate and political backlash has been swift.

The board of Moriel Infrastructure Group announced the immediate termination of Mudzinganyama’s roles as both executive chairman and director, stating his behaviour contradicts company values.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has prioritized the case and requested the Department of Home Affairs to audit Mudzinganyama’s legal status within South Africa. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has ordered an independent investigation into his business operations regarding existing SANRAL tenders.

In a public statement, Mudzinganyama unreservedly apologized to the affected women, calling his aggressive language “unacceptable and unjustifiable” while promising full cooperation with law enforcement.

The SAPS reiterated its commitment to protecting victims of gender-based hostility, stating that women have an absolute right to dignity and safety, and all allegations of intimidation will be pursued without fear or favour.
