An attempt to capture a picture of a wandering elephant turned fatal when the jumbo suddenly charged at 53-year-old of Nalituba Village in Kapiri Mposhi District, Central Province.

Abel Mukuni was attempting to photograph the elephant with his mobile phone when it attacked him, killing him instantly.

The incident happened on August 26, 2026, at around 10:00 hours in Misiku Village in the Nalituba area, under Chief Chipepo’s Chiefdom.

Central Province Police Commanding Officer, Lemekani Chirwa confirmed that the deceased was standing about four meters from the elephant when it suddenly charged at him.

Mr Chirwa said the elephant struck Mr Mukuni with its trunk before trampling him thereby inflicting fatal injuries.

He said preliminary investigations suggest that the elephant had strayed from Lunga National Park in neighbouring Ngabwe District.

The Commanding Officer said officers from the Mpunde Patrol Unit responded to the scene and verified that Mr Mukuni had sustained multiple injuries consistent with an elephant attack.

He said the body has since been deposited at Kabwe Central Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.

Mr Chirwa said the Department of National Parks and Wildlife has been notified and is working to track the stray elephant.
