ITALY REJECTS RUSSIAN CLAIMS: “A COLOSSAL LIE”

Russia’s disinformation campaign surrounding the explosion at Moscow’s Balzi Rossi restaurant continues to unravel.

After Russian officials and state media attempted to suggest that the attack was intended to intimidate Italians working in Russia, Italy’s Foreign Minister dismissed the claim outright.

“A colossal lie. Why would Ukrainians want to intimidate Italians? If anything, it is the Russians who may be trying to intimidate Italians, given that we support Ukraine.”

The statement cuts to the heart of the issue.

There is no logical motive for Ukraine to target Italian civilians or businesses. Italy has been one of Ukraine’s key European partners, providing military aid, humanitarian assistance, and diplomatic support since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

By contrast, Russia has repeatedly used information operations following major incidents, often advancing competing narratives before investigations have concluded.

Intelligence agencies across Europe have long warned that the Kremlin uses disinformation to sow confusion, shift blame, and drive wedges between Ukraine and its allies.

In this case, Italian officials appear to be rejecting that narrative entirely.
