PRES. HICHILEMA SAYS HE IS PROUD ZAMBIA HAS POLITICAL COMPETITION.

President Hakainde Hichilema says he welcomes political competition, describing it as a sign of a healthy democracy in Zambia.

Speaking during an interview with BBC Africa today, President Hichilema said he is not worried by the emergence of other presidential contenders, insisting that competition is essential in a democratic nation.

When asked why Zambians should re-elect him, the President said his vision is to build a stable and prosperous country that will enable future generations to enjoy opportunities comparable to those in developed nations.

Mr. Hichilema said his administration inherited a struggling economy that required urgent reforms, adding that the challenges were greater than he had anticipated while in opposition.

“We came into office and found a broken-down country. Everything was going down. We made promises when we were in opposition, and largely we have delivered. We said we would restructure the debt, and we did. We promised to create employment, and we have employed 45,000 teachers, over 25,000 health personnel, as well as thousands in the military and other sectors. The job is not yet finished. We cannot create employment for everyone at once, but as the country continues to grow, those still waiting will also have opportunities,” he said.

Responding to a question on whether he was concerned by the emergence of new presidential challengers, President Hichilema maintained that political competition should be celebrated rather than feared.

“I personally am happy for democracy. This is how it should be. We need to compete for a country like Zambia. Competition should not worry anyone. It is important, and we wish our colleagues well,” he said.
