NO MORE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA AND WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES? GHANA SAYS ECOWAS MEMBERS ARE BACKING ITS PETITION TO THE AFRICAN UNION OVER ALLEGED XENOPHOBIC ATTACK

Diplomatic tensions are rising after Ghana announced that it has secured the backing of fellow ECOWAS member states for its petition to the African Union regarding what it describes as xenophobic attacks and anti-migrant protests in South Africa.

According to reports, Ghana believes the issue has become serious enough to require intervention at the continental level. ECOWAS, which represents 12 West African countries, is said to be supporting Ghana’s position as concerns continue to grow over the safety of some of their citizens living and working in South Africa.

The development comes during ongoing debates over illegal immigration, border security and community protests in parts of South Africa. While many South Africans say they are calling for stronger enforcement of immigration laws rather than violence against foreign nationals, several African countries have expressed concern about reports of attacks and intimidation.

If the matter is escalated at the African Union, it could place additional diplomatic pressure on South Africa and may affect relations between Pretoria and some West African governments if no common ground is found.

South African authorities have repeatedly stated that they do not support xenophobia and have urged people to resolve disputes peacefully while law enforcement deals with criminal activity.
