FOUR ITALIAN SOLDIERS INJURED IN NATO TRAINING ACCIDENT IN LATVIA

Four Italian service members were injured during a reported friendly-fire incident at a NATO exercise in Latvia, according to the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.

An Italian armored combat vehicle reportedly fired accidentally toward another vehicle carrying Italian troops. The four injured soldiers were transported to a hospital in Riga.

One was initially reported to be in more serious condition, but none of the injuries is currently considered life-threatening.

An investigation is underway to establish how the weapon was discharged and whether the incident resulted from human error, a technical failure or a breakdown in training procedures.

Exercises in Latvia are intended to prepare NATO forces to operate together under realistic battlefield conditions along the Alliance’s eastern flank. This incident does not diminish that mission, but it does underline why coordination, weapons discipline and communication between crews must be tested rigorously before those forces ever face a real enemy.
