Operation Young Vote (OYV) has called on authorities to ensure uninterrupted internet access throughout the upcoming election period, warning that any network shutdown could undermine democratic principles and deprive citizens of vital information.

 In an interview with the Zambian Business Times (ZBT), OYV Executive Director Isaac Mwale emphasized the importance of maintaining open digital channels during elections, referencing the 2021 general election where internet disruptions hampered public communication on social media platforms. Mwale argued that a free and open flow of information is fundamental to a healthy democracy, especially as Zambia prepares for an election featuring a significant number of first-time voters.

“An open space where ideas can flow smoothly and freely is crucial for a maturing democracy like ours,” Mwale stated.

He highlighted that internet shutdowns not only hinder political actors but also disenfranchise voters by restricting their access to information and limiting their ability to engage with candidates ahead of casting their ballots.

 Mwale further noted that shutting down communication platforms deprives political stakeholders of the opportunity to reach undecided voters, thereby weakening the overall democratic process. Civil society organizations, Mwale added that they are also negatively impacted by internet restrictions, as they depend on digital communication to coordinate their activities and gather information during elections.

 Mwale urged all institutions responsible for managing communication infrastructure to act with professionalism and prioritize citizens’ right to information throughout the electoral process. He stressed that the upcoming election presents new challenges and complexities, making voter education and access to accurate information more critical than ever.

 According to Mwale, restricting access to information risks increasing voter apathy and the incidence of spoiled ballots. He concluded by appealing to all stakeholders to uphold democratic freedoms by ensuring the continuous availability of communication platforms during the election period, thereby empowering every eligible voter to make informed decisions.
