ZAMBIA Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) president Fray Michelo has advised newly employed volunteer nurses not to fear rural postings and to serve where Zambia needs them most.

President Hakainde Hichilema, during his continued countrywide community engagements, has been directing the immediate employment of volunteer nurses who have been attending the meetings.

In a statement, Friday, Michelo welcomed the commencement of government’s recruitment process for health workers, particularly the opportunity being given to nurses and midwives who have sacrificed their time serving as volunteers.

“To those who will be successfully recruited, my message is simple: employment is not only an opportunity to earn a salary; it is a call to serve the Zambian people. Do not fear a rural posting. Go where Zambia needs you most. A nurse in a remote health centre can mean the difference between life and death,” Michelo said.

He appealed to government to continue improving accommodation, incentives, equipment and working conditions for health workers serving in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Michelo further observed that rural Zambia still needs nurses and midwives.

“There are communities where mothers, children and families desperately need the services that many of our nurses and midwives can provide. Healthcare should never depend on a person’s postal address. Whether one lives in Lusaka or the remotest village of Zambia, every citizen deserves access to a nurse, a midwife and quality healthcare,” said Michelo.
