CHONGWE, LUSAKA PROVINCE, July 15, 2026 – Hundreds of residents in Chongwe stayed out late into the night on Tuesday to listen to National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRP-UP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu as the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance kicked off its Lusaka Province campaign.
The Chongwe rally concluded a busy first day for the opposition presidential ticket, which earlier held a midday rally in Luangwa before conducting a roadshow through Rufunsa on their way to Chongwe.
Despite the evening chill, supporters turned out in large numbers, cheering, singing campaign songs and waving party symbol – the lamp as they waited for the arrival of Mundubile and Makebi.
The two leaders have increasingly been attracting sizeable crowds at campaign events across the country, having already toured the Copperbelt, Central, Eastern, Muchinga, Northern and Luapula provinces before bringing their campaign to Lusaka.
Addressing the gathering, Mundubile reiterated his pledge to “reset” Zambia’s economy should he be elected President in the August 13 General Election.
He said his administration would focus on creating jobs, improving the quality of free education, supporting farmers through timely delivery of agricultural inputs and payments, lowering the cost of doing business and restoring confidence in public institutions.
The NRP-UP leader also repeated his commitment to ending what he described as cadreism in public institutions, saying government offices should remain professional and serve all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
Mundubile urged supporters to remain peaceful throughout the campaign period while encouraging them to turn out in large numbers on polling day.
Running mate Makebi Zulu also addressed the rally, telling supporters that the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance was offering what he described as a fresh direction for Zambia.
He criticised the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) over the rising cost of living and accused the government of failing to fulfil a number of promises made during the 2021 election campaign.
Zulu called on voters to support the alliance, saying the election presented an opportunity for change.
The Chongwe rally marked the beginning of what is expected to be an intensive week of campaigning for the opposition in Lusaka Province.
According to the campaign schedule released by the alliance, Mundubile and Makebi are expected to hold rallies in Kafue and Chilanga before embarking on roadshows in Munali, Lusaka Central, Kabwata, Chawama, Makeni, Kanyama, Roma, Lilanda and Mandevu.
The campaign tour will culminate in a major presidential rally in Matero on Friday.
Lusaka Province is regarded by political analysts as one of the country’s most important electoral battlegrounds because of its large number of registered voters and its history of closely contested elections.
As campaigns enter their final month, both the ruling UPND and the opposition are intensifying their efforts to win over voters in key provinces ahead of the August 13 General Election.
