Chief Kazembe of the Chewa-speaking people in Lumezi District has congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema, on his re-election as Republican President in the recently held General Election.
Chief Kazembe said traditional leaders remain resolute in working with the Government of the day to promote development and improve the welfare of their communities.
He was speaking when Lumezi District Commissioner, retired Brigadier General, Patrick Mtonga, called on him at his palace in connection with the Eastern Province Jurisdiction Sustainable Landscape Project.
The traditional leader commended the Government for promoting sustainable forest management through the establishment of Community Forest Management Groups under the project.
Chief Kazembe said the initiative would contribute significantly to the conservation and sustainable management of forests while providing communities with opportunities to benefit from natural resources.
He said such developmental programmes should be supported by all stakeholders, adding that the traditional leadership will continue working closely with the Government to spearhead developmental activities in the area.
And the DC said the Government remains committed to working with traditional leaders in advancing development in Lumezi district.
Rtrd General Mtonga said traditional leaders and Government share a common responsibility of serving the interests of the people.
“We are all part of the Government because we do the same thing, which is serving the interests of our people. Hence, we remain partners in development with the traditional leadership,” he said.
He further described the Eastern Province Jurisdiction Sustainable Landscape Project as a vital intervention aimed at promoting sustainable development, protecting the environment and empowering communities with resources that contribute to their socio-economic development.
