‘Canaan Banana, Zimbabwe’s First President Who Criminalized Jokes About His Name Before Being Jailed For Sodomy’

When Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, Canaan Banana became the country’s first president, while Robert Mugabe served as prime minister with executive powers. Although Banana’s role was largely ceremonial, his surname quickly became the subject of jokes and ridicule across the country.

In an effort to protect the dignity of the presidency, the Zimbabwean government amended the Law and Order (Maintenance) Act in 1982. The law made it a criminal offense to insult, ridicule, or publicly mock the president, including making jokes about his surname.

Banana left office in 1987 after Zimbabwe amended its Constitution to merge the offices of president and prime minister, paving the way for Robert Mugabe to become executive president. He initially retired with state benefits and later served in diplomatic roles.

However, his legacy took a dramatic turn a decade later. During a court case involving a former police officer, allegations emerged that Banana had sexually abused several adult men and coerced male staff, security guards, and sports players at the State House.

Following a lengthy trial, he was convicted on multiple counts of sodomy and indecent assault. After secretly fleeing, leaving Zimbabwe, he returned to face justice and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with nine years suspended, meaning he served about one year. He was released early after serving roughly eight months.

Banana died of cancer in 2003 at the age of 67. Owing to his criminal convictions, he was not accorded Zimbabwe’s National Hero status, bringing a controversial end to the life of the country’s first president.
