Political commentator Laura Miti has delivered a blunt assessment of Zambia’s political landscape, questioning both the opposition’s readiness to govern and the ruling UPND’s commitment to democracy.

Miti says Brian Mundubile initially struck her as a politician who was “entirely not ready to run a country,” adding that her concerns remained throughout the campaign.

She, however, says she later came to view Mundubile as an ordinary Zambian who may not harbour bad intentions, while expressing deeper concern about the political forces surrounding him and his running mate, Makebi Zulu.

Miti says she viewed the NRPUP as a proxy for the former ruling PF, raising fears about what a return of those forces to power could have meant for Zambia.

She points to the alleged behaviour of cadres who celebrated and went on a rampage after believing Mundubile had won, asking a chilling question: “What would have happened if he had actually taken office?”

More importantly, Miti questions whether Mundubile would truly have been in charge or whether other powerful figures would have exercised influence behind the scenes.

Turning to President Hakainde Hichilema, Miti gives credit where she believes it is due, arguing that the UPND government performed strongly on the economy during its first term.

She says economic indicators, including inflation and the exchange rate, moved into more positive territory, while the stability of prices for basic commodities gave households greater ability to plan.

But Miti sharply criticises the UPND’s record on politics and governance.

She cites controversial legislation, alleged interference in opposition politics, concerns surrounding institutions such as the Registrar of Societies, corruption concerns and controversial appointments as reasons for her disappointment.

She also raises concerns about the conduct surrounding the 2026 election and the events following the polls.

According to Miti, there are already worrying signs that the UPND could become even more politically aggressive during its second term.

She points to the closure of courts before the President’s inauguration and what she describes as confusing communication from the Judiciary over electoral petition documentation.

Her biggest fear, however, is the possibility of ruling-party cadres adopting the same type of political behaviour that characterised the PF era.

She therefore puts the responsibility squarely on citizens.

“Will we be able to say to him, yes, you were the best we had, but that does not mean that we will let you get away with doing what you know is patently wrong?” she asks.
