Binwell reported to police over ‘ready to kill, be killed’ remarks
DEMOCRATIC Advocates for Good Governance executive director Fabian Mutale has reported former Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu to the police over a viral video posted on his Facebook page, in which he allegedly declared that in this election “he is ready to be killed and to kill.”
In the video, Mr Mpundu stated that there is much at stake for people like him in this election, adding that he is prepared either to die or to kill.
Mr Mutale described the remarks as unacceptable and alarming, warning that they could cause panic among citizens, especially with the country’s general election set for this week.
“The video by Mr Mpundu brought fear in me. I became concerned that, in this era, we have people willing to sink so low as to wish to die or to kill just to secure a leadership position,” he said.
“My understanding is that leadership is service. Those who wish to be served should freely choose their leaders without coercion.
”Speaking in an interview, Mr Mutale stressed that politics should never be reduced to a matter of life and death.
“To quote the speaker’s words: ‘there is so much at stake in this election for some of us.’ What exactly is at stake?
The people of Zambia deserve to know, and only the speaker can provide those answers,” he said.
He urged the police to thoroughly investigate the matter, noting that Mr Mpundu’s statement was made in the plural rather than the singular.
Meanwhile, Zambia Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that the service has taken interest in the video.
