POLICE have recorded a deadly day on Zambian roads, with 5 people killed, 47 seriously injured, and 2 others slightly injured in separate road traffic accidents in Lusaka and Chongwe districts on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said investigations have been instituted into all the accidents and the involved vehicles impounded.

At around 07:00 hours along Nasser Road near Government Complex, a Toyota Hiace public service minibus, reg. ALT 9212, driven by Lastone Kapembwa, 49, of Bauleni Compound, lost control due to excessive speed.

The minibus crashed into four gates at Government Complex before colliding with two stationary Mitsubishi Rosa buses.

Three passengers died on the spot: Getrude Mwewa, 4, Gratso Mutofwe, 50-55, and Dominic Choomba, 50-55. Their bodies are at UTH Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

The driver and 23 passengers sustained serious injuries, while 2 others had slight injuries. The injured are receiving treatment at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital and UTH.

In Chongwe, around 17:30 hours near Itope Gate along Munyeta Road, a Hino Ranger truck, reg. AJE 59 ZM, driven by Wyclif Lifuna, 39, ran over pedestrian Noah Phiri, 23, after he reportedly fell onto the road.

Phiri died shortly after being admitted to Chinyunyu Clinic. His body is at Chongwe District Hospital Mortuary.

Around 20:00 hours along Great East Road near Marshlands, a Honda Fit, reg. BBF 603 ZM, driven by Lovely Chilayi, 29, of Marrapodi, lost control due to excessive speed, crossed the median and collided head-on with a Toyota Hiace minibus, reg. BBD 841 ZM. The Honda Fit driver died on arrival at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital. The vehicle was extensively damaged and caught fire. The Hiace driver and 19 passengers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Levy Mwanawasa.

Mumbwa Road, Kanyama – 07:30hrs: A Honda Fit, reg. CAJ 3815, driven by Kennedy Chisanga, 38, collided head-on with a Tata, reg. BCF 8451, driven by Ben Mutakela, 33. Police say the Tata driver failed to keep to his lane. The Honda Fit driver and passenger were seriously injured and admitted to Kanyama General Hospital. The Tata driver escaped unhurt.

Zambezi Road, Chelstone – 18:30hrs: A Toyota Camry, reg. BAL 2502 ZM, driven by Chileshe Temba, 45, hit pedestrian Francis Chansa, 35, near Roma Park. Chansa sustained head injuries and is admitted to Levy Mwanawasa. The driver was not injured.
