Police in Sinda District have nabbed a 19- year-old male of Chimbete Village in Chieftainess Nyanje for allegedly defiling a 2-year-old girl child.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has named the suspect as Richard Banda who was apprehended with the help of the community on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at around 18:00 hours when he attempted to flee.

Mr Mweemba revealed that the suspect was caught with the assistance of community members who were alerted by the victims grandfather after he noticed him on top of the child on the veranda of his house.

“The suspect was entrusted with the child by her father to escort her to the mother between 13:00 and 14:00 hours before he diverted and had carnal knowledge of a child,” he said.

It is reported that the suspect had been drinking the whole morning of the incident.

The victim sustained bruised private parts and remains admitted to Nyanje Mission Hospital.

“A docket case has been opened, as the suspect remains in custody as he is  expected to appear in court,” Mr Mweemba said.
