The Assistant Technical Officer – Analytical Services plays a pivotal role by offering operational and supervisory support within the laboratory’s technical team. This position acts as the key liaison between the Technical Officer and laboratory analysts, overseeing wet chemistry processes, instrumentation preparation, and sample management to uphold rigorous quality and safety standards. Key Responsibilities Workflow Supervision: Manage and monitor the daily activities of the Assayer – Lab Analyst to ensure adherence to testing schedules and quality benchmarks. Analytical Support: Assist Technical Officers with chemical procedures including acid digestions, filtrations, solution preparations, and reagent mixing. Technical Reporting: Prepare and submit detailed weekly, monthly, and quarterly laboratory performance reports aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, covering equipment usage, turnaround times, chemical consumption, waste management, and calibration records. Proficiency Testing Coordination: Oversee the reception, scheduling, and processing of external proficiency testing samples, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures. Customer Support: Facilitate prompt handling of high-priority samples and escalate unresolved client issues to the Technical Officer. Equipment Maintenance: Supervise routine cleaning and verification of sample preparation machinery and laboratory balances. Inventory Management: Monitor chemical reagents and consumables inventory, reporting stock levels to trigger timely procurement. Data Integrity: Maintain accurate logs for sample custody, preparation parameters, and equipment calibration to ensure quality control and traceability. Health and Safety Compliance: Enforce laboratory safety protocols, including mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment during hazardous operations. Qualifications and Experience General Certificate of Education (GCE) or equivalent with credits in at least five subjects including English and Mathematics. Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline. Minimum of three years’ experience in a laboratory environment with responsibilities in quality management. Proven supervisory experience managing multidisciplinary technical teams. Eligibility or registration with a recognized professional body is preferred. Skills and Competencies Technical Expertise: Proficient in multi-stage sample preparation techniques and wet chemistry laboratory procedures. Reporting and Compliance: Skilled in compiling and analyzing operational data in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards. Inventory and Data Management: Competent in chemical stock control and maintaining meticulous laboratory records.
