ZIMBABWE DRIVERS COULD SOON NEED MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AS PARLIAMENT RECEIVES PETITION TO PROFESSIONALISE THE INDUSTRY
A major debate has erupted in Zimbabwe after a petition was submitted to Parliament calling for the driving profession to be formally recognised and regulated, including the introduction of minimum educational qualifications for drivers.
The petition, submitted by the Drivers’ Association of Zimbabwe, proposes the creation of a legally recognised professional body that would oversee standards in the industry and establish entry-level educational requirements for those seeking to become professional drivers.
Supporters argue that higher standards could improve road safety, professionalism and accountability within the transport sector. Critics, however, warn that introducing educational requirements could exclude thousands of capable drivers who have years of experience but limited formal education
Parliament has referred the matter to its Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development for further consideration, setting the stage for a national discussion on the future of the driving profession in Zimbabwe.
Should Zimbabwe make minimum educational qualifications compulsory for professional drivers, or should driving skills and experience be enough?
