Zelenskyy Welcomes Western Allies to Kyiv Ahead of Independence Day
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Western leaders and senior officials arriving in Kyiv on August 23, one day before Ukraine marks its Independence Day.
The visits come as Ukraine seeks to strengthen coordination with its European partners amid continued Russian attacks and growing pressure on Kyiv’s air-defense capabilities. French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to accelerate deliveries of French military equipment and missiles to Ukraine, while European allies continue discussions on additional security support.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow would respond to Ukraine’s expanding attacks against Russian economic infrastructure, saying Russia would target Ukraine’s “most sensitive economic sectors.”
The warning follows a series of Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian economic and energy facilities, while Russia has continued striking infrastructure across Ukraine.
With Ukraine preparing to mark its Independence Day under wartime conditions, the arrival of Western partners in Kyiv sends a clear political signal of continued support for the Ukrainian government as the conflict enters another period of escalation.
