Provincial Elections Officer, Nixon Nkwapu, says meaningful youth participation is critical to strengthening democracy and ensuring credible elections.
Mr Nkwapu was speaking during a civic education engagement with youth groups in Mongu.
“The Commission is urging the youths in the province to take keen interest in understanding the electoral process ahead of the August 2026 elections,” he said.
He emphasised that young people have a vital role to play beyond just voting.
“We are emphasising the importance of youth’s contribution to the electoral processes in a meaningful manner. The active participation of youth will promote and enhance democracy in the country,” Mr Nkwapu stated.
The Provincial Elections Officer also took time to explain recent constitutional reforms aimed at increasing representation of marginalised groups.
Mr Nkwapu explained the provision for the 40 seats of proportional representation for women, youths, and persons with disabilities as provided for under Constitution Amendment Act No. 13 of 2025.
“The amendment is meant to ensure that women, youths and persons with disability are adequately represented in political positions and in decision-making,” he said.
Mr Nkwapu further reiterated the Commission’s commitment to public education and transparency.
“The Commission remains committed to providing information to the public about the electoral process so that every eligible voter, especially the youth, can participate effectively,” he added.
The ECZ says it will continue rolling out voter education programmes across all districts in the province in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
