The Department of Community Development under the Food Security Pack has commenced the verification and validation of beneficiaries to be enrolled for another three-year programme where they will receive farming inputs.

The exercise follows a successful recruitment exercise that was conducted early this year.

Community Development Officers in Kaoma are on the ground to conduct the exercise, following the receipt of inputs that are due for distribution.

Leading the team, Community Development Officer, Mwanida Mukosayi, disclosed in an interview with the media that Kaoma district has a total of 2,044 beneficiaries who are classified as vulnerable but viable.

Mrs Mukosayi revealed that the district has since received inputs under both wetlands and rain-fed packages for the beneficiaries.

She said the department could not start the distribution before beneficiaries are verified in order to avoid duplication with the Ministry of Agriculture.

“It is a crime for any person to benefit both under the Farmer Input Support Programme and the Food Security Pack because they are similar government empowerment programmes aimed at uplifting people’s livelihoods and alleviating poverty,” Mrs Mukosayi explained.

She further stated that each farmer, depending on their location, will be given 5kg of maize seed, one bag of Compound D fertilizer, one bag of Urea fertilizer, groundnut seed, vegetable seed and compensation.

Mrs Mukosayi said distribution will be done immediately after verification is completed.

She has since appealed to beneficiaries not to divert the seeds for purposes other than those intended.

One of the beneficiaries, Bella Munyama from Mwanche area commended the government for the programme, saying it aims to improve livelihoods.

Ms Munyama explained how difficult it was for her to venture into agriculture due to lack of farming inputs and said her household lacked enough food to feed for her family.

“Hunger is now out of my household because with the seeds that I will be given I am able to grow, harvest, sell some and have money to buy other necessities” she said.

Another beneficiary, Monde Nawa, from Kaoma Ndonga area said after harvesting, she will be able to support her children with both food and school requirements.

Ms Nawa assured the government that the inputs will be put to good use.

Food Security Pack (FSP) is a social protection programme run by the government through the Department of Community Development under the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services.

The programme targets the most vulnerable but viable households who cannot afford farming inputs on their own. The goal is to help them become self-reliant in food production and improve their livelihoods.
