Zambia : Power Kick Off Champions League Campaign In Rwanda

Power Dynamos kick off their CAF Champions League campaign on Saturday night with a tricky away encounter against Sudan’s El Merriekh at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

‎Kickoff is 19h00.
‎
‎The first leg preliminary round tie has been moved to Rwanda due to the internal conflict in Sudan.
‎
‎The Zambian champions are coming into the 2026/2027 campaign on the back of steady progress in the last two seasons.
‎
‎For Power, this year’s campaign comes after a successful 2025/2026 edition when they made their group stage debut in the Champions League for the first time.
‎
‎El Merriekh are perennial participants in CAF club games, but have failed to reach the group stages in their last three continental campaigns.
‎
‎Bookmakers note that Sudanese clubs, particularly Al Hilal and El Merriekh, have historically been challenging opponents for Zambian teams in continental action.
‎
‎Power coach Oswald Mutapa says playing at night will not be a factor and insists his team is ready.
‎
‎“Preparations have been good and we have had many training sessions. The team is looking good and players are fighting for places in the team,”_ Mutapa said.
‎
‎“We have no injury worries, everyone is ready for the match,” he added.
‎
‎The return leg is set for Saturday, 12 September at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
‎
‎The winners will advance to the Second Preliminary Round scheduled for 16-18 October and 23-25 October.
‎
‎The 16 winners from that round will advance to the group stage at the end of November.
