The Zambia Police Service has dismissed claims that it cancelled campaign rallies for National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) president Brian Mundubile on the Copperbelt, stating that all scheduled rallies have proceeded as planned.

Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the confusion arose because the party allegedly conducted roadshows and processions without notifying the police after obtaining clearance for rallies.

Mr. Chilabi explained that while all approved rallies had taken place, police only intervened when supporters attempted to hold processions that had not been communicated in advance.

He noted that, unlike rallies held at fixed venues, roadshows require prior planning because they use public roads shared by motorists and other road users.

According to Mr. Chilabi, advance notice enables police to deploy officers, plan routes and inform the public where traffic may be affected during political processions.

He added that allowing unplanned roadshows could endanger both supporters and motorists, as drivers may unexpectedly encounter large crowds on public roads.

Mr. Chilabi also said police have a responsibility to safeguard businesses and members of the public, noting that large processions can sometimes create opportunities for criminal activity.

He reiterated that the Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring all political parties are able to campaign freely, provided organisers comply with established procedures designed to protect lives, property and public order.
